If you fell in love with the city of Baldur’s Gate thanks to the hit video game Baldur’s Gate 3 from Larian Studios, Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus is the perfect place to start your D&D journey.

In Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus, the DM and players embark on an epic quest spanning from one of the most beloved D&D cities to the first layer of the Nine Hells. In this blog, we’ll be taking a look at what this D&D adventure has to offer and exploring how the Roll20 Tabletop makes it a breeze to play!

The holy city of Elturel has gone to hell – literally – and Baldur’s Gate may be next. After being pressed into service by the Flaming Fist, the characters uncover an infernal conspiracy and must find a way to save Elturel and perhaps even the ruler of Avernus herself!

Remarkable Locations and Fan Favorite Characters

In the sordid city of Baldur’s Gate, players visit the famed Elfsong Tavern on their first assignment from the Flaming Fist. Eventually they can leave the city for the renowned Candlekeep Library and meet Lulu, a hollyphant with memory issues, who may hold the key to saving the day.

In the wasteland of Avernus, a war between devils and demons rages on endlessly. Players can seek out both the noble Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard and the night hag Mad Maggie; Maggie can set the characters up with vehicles to traverse the hellish landscape. There’s even a potential special guest appearance by Joe Manganiello’s Arkhan the Cruel, still in possession of a certain hand…

The antagonist looming over it all is the archdevil Zariel, a fallen angel whose determination to participate in the Blood War corrupted her long ago, but even she may not be beyond redemption…

In addition to the adventure’s wondrous locations and characters, Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus contains advice for devilish contracts, rules for Infernal War Machines (think the vehicles in Mad Max: Fury Road), and several new creatures including my personal favorite: the abyssal chicken!

Playing on Roll20

The Roll20 version of Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus contains everything you need to start your adventure to the Hells today! There’s an entire page in the game dedicated to Roll20 Tips & Tricks, so  Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus can serve as not only an intro to D&D, but to Roll20 as well!

All the maps from the adventure are organized into Folders and preset with Dynamic Lighting (for Plus and Pro subscribers). This means the maps are ready for the DM to drop characters in without additional setup – walls, doors, windows, and lights are placed for you so you can get playing quickly!

Monsters and NPC tokens – complete with one-click Token Actions to speed up rolls without having to open character sheets – are already in place. Many of the tokens have a fun pop-out style to enhance immersion. (Some of the more *changeable* characters even have rollable tokens for surprising reveals!)

All the additional rules referenced in the adventure have been dragged in and linked throughout the game, so one screen contains everything you need to play. An additional Addon of Rollable Tables and Macros for encounters and events around the city – including a dark secret for your party – can also be added to your game for no additional cost!

Speaking of fun additions to the game…
