We had a chance to catch up with Jen from Ame Kuma Maps about the Fey Dragon Lair s and learn more about what’s so thrilling about bringing dragons to life on the tabletop!
What was the inspiration behind creating this map?
I was running an adventure at my own table and I needed a map which allowed me to both show the power of an ancient fey dragon named Kiazzmaya, and encapsulate the capricious wonder of the Feywild. This started as an effort to create a cool environment for the party to have an audience with Kiazzmaya. They didn’t know much about her before they got there, but I wanted the map to inform them about who she was.
What inspired you to start creating content for the Roll20 Marketplace?
Due to lifestyle changes and moving (maybe a pandemic as well), most of my games shifted online to Roll20. I love making art and needed maps so it was a natural next step.
What is it about dragons that you find inspires adventures?
They are classic mythological beings across so many cultures. Everyone, whether a gamer or not, knows dragon tales. Tolkien, St George, Chinese dragons and, from my teen years, Dragonlance. Dragons just hook you.
If you could choose one type of dragon as a benefactor, which would you choose?
Being born in the year of the Dragon, I would take a Chinese water dragon, who doesn’t need some extra luck and kindness, courtesy of a huge beast, their life?
What is your favorite piece of Dragon lore from within the D&D multiverse?
**Possible Curse of Strahd spoiler – you’ve been warned!** Argynvost, a silver dragon with an order of knights devoted to keeping evil powers at bay is a great concept. The Order of the Silver Dragon always has a role in my CoS games.
Do you have a favorite moment to share involving a dragon from your own table?
Slightly embarrassing but in the first game I played, I was DMing a “red box” game. I was so excited by the gold dragon in the monster section, I added it to the dungeon. My level two players saw the dragon and instantly attacked. The dragon used the breath weapon (in my defense, it looked so cool in the book) and voila, I had my first TPK. I remember having no clue what to do next and the elf player asking “what happens now?” It taught me an important lesson; less is more with dragons.
