Starting a D&D campaign is an exciting journey, and with Roll20, it’s never been easier to bring your adventure to life. Whether you’re a seasoned Dungeon Master or stepping behind the screen for the first time, Roll20’s tools streamline the process so you can focus on storytelling and fun.
Whether you’re a seasoned Dungeon Master or new to running games, this guide will walk you through each step to get your campaign up and running, from creating your game, adding official/third party content from the Roll20 Marketplace, to inviting your players. Roll20 makes launching your campaign easier than ever in 6 easy steps. Let’s walk through them!
Step 1: Create Your Game
- Login to your account and you’ll find yourself on the Home Page.
- Click Create New Game
- Once you’re on the new game screen, you can add a title.
Step 2: Pick Your Character Sheet
- Pick a Character Sheet – we recommend the D&D 2024 Character Sheet which will help you make the most of the D&D 2024 Core Rulebook Bundle with:
- Full integration and automated features within your virtual table top and the D&D 2024 Character Sheet – and in searchable compendium format!
- Ready-to-use maps & tokens to flesh out your adventures.
- Exclusive order bonuses you can’t get anywhere else.
Step 3: Add Your Adventure
- Choose an adventure module from your Roll20 library — like Eberron: Heart of Stone, which comes FREE with the D&D 2024 Core Rulebook Bundle!
- Then click the “I’m ready! Create Game!”
Step 3: Customize Your Campaign Page
Your campaign page is the page players see when they join. On this page you can:
- Schedule your next session.
- Change your header art.
- Select which game you’re playing to be clear for your players and LFG postings.
Step 4: Add Content
This is also where you can import additional content for your game in the “Game Addons” section. You can add items like:
- The Dungeon Master’s Guide (2024) Maps & Trackers or D&D 2024 Core Rulebook Bundle bonuses like the Fantasy Starter Collection.
- You can even add additional campaigns if you want to include content from both in your adventure – like running Waterdeep: Dragon Heist into Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage or running all the Phandelver based content like Lost Mine of Phandelver, Dragon of Icespire Peak, or any of – OR any of the other third party content you can purchase in our Marketplace.
Step 5: Invite Players
On the upper right side of your campaign page, you can click the Invite Players button and it will open a window where you can invite your players, either by email or by sharing a link.
Step 6: Launch your game!
Now it’s time to launch your game – where the real magic happens! Once you launch your game, that’s where you can actually see the virtual tabletop, the group chat on the right hand side with more tabs for art library, journal (for handouts and character sheets), Compendium (in platform searchable access to rulebook info and monsters/spells/items/etc. for drag and drop onto the tabletop and character sheets, Jukebox (for in game ambience and music), Macros, and Settings.
