If the icy isolation of John Carpenter’s The Thing is your jam, Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden is the perfect campaign for you!

Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden drops characters in a perpetual winter caused by the wrath of a goddess. In the frigid northern region, they may solve strange murders, defend the settlements of Ten-Towns, and uncover an ancient city long forgotten in the ice.

In this blog, we take a look at the unique offerings of this D&D adventure and dive into how the Roll20 Tabletop makes it a cinch to play.

The goddess Auril the Frostmaiden weaves a nightly spell that blocks the sun’s light and warmth across The Far North. This perpetual dark winter allows for a duergar despot to make a move for power and a secret society of mages to unearth secrets better left buried…

Ten-Towns, The Far North, and a Netherese Necropolis

Each settlement in the starting area of Ten-Towns comes with its own quest to get your player characters embroiled in the region’s troubles quickly. Rumors can guide the PCs from one town to the next, and their reputations will increase or decrease depending on their actions.

As the party ventures further into the wilderness following Tall Tales they have heard, they may end a feud between rival goliath clans and visit a high security prison!

Their adventure through the icy wastes are likely to lead them to a duergar fortress where they will face a difficult choice: defend Ten-Towns from a mysterious dragon or defeat the mad despot! From there, the characters may travel to Auril’s frigid lair in the hopes of ending her wintry spell. Afterwards, they may unearth the necropolis of Ythryn, an ancient formerly-flying city, and square off against the Arcane Brotherhood!

Play a Goliath, Choose Character Secrets, and Face a Goddess

The locations aren’t all there is to Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden. The campaign provides character customization options as well! Originally introduced in D&D 3.5e, goliaths in Icewind Dale live in high mountain peaks away from the settlements on Ten-Towns. Two rival clans live in the Spine of the World mountains, so a player character from one of these clans will have a juicy story hook from the get-go.

This campaign also provides the option to grant each party member a secret. Some give characters contacts or companions that can be valuable allies – like a snowy owlbear or an adorable yeti tyke. Other secrets – like being infected with a slaad egg – are a bit more explosive when revealed.

Finally, one of the most compelling things about Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden is that your party can go toe-to-toe with a goddess! Facing Auril is no simple task, whether the characters engage her directly or not. She isn’t even limited to one form, and in her lair, the characters will be faced with daunting trials known as the Tests of the Frostmaiden.
