UPDATE: As of August 1, 2024, the Jumpgate Beta is open to all users! Details can be found here.

🎉 We’re excited to announce that the Beta of Project Jumpgate, announced earlier this year, is now open to Plus Subscribers, effective immediately! 🎉

(Not a Roll20 subscriber? Sign up today for as low as $4.17 to unlock access to the Beta!)

What is Project Jumpgate?

Jumpgate is Roll20’s major Tabletop modernization project, designed to make your games better, faster, and easier to set up and play. At its foundation, a brand-new rendering engine means that you can expect enhanced performance with lower CPU and memory usage in even the largest campaigns, or on the simplest machines. On the surface, highly-requested updates to the user interface provide improvements to tools and features accessible in-game (more of which we’ll call out at the bottom of this post).

Previously open to Pro Subscribers – Plus subscribers can now join the Jumpgate Beta!

Since the launch of the Beta, our top priority has been identifying and addressing session-breaking bugs (thanks in large part to the helpful feedback of our testers) to ensure the reliability of the Jumpgate system. Our latest Blog shares a bit more about what we’ve heard so far, how it influences our progress, and what we plan to work on next.

By extending access to the Beta to our Plus Subscribers, we are looking forward to even more feedback from your real-world game sessions. Your input directly contributes to ensuring that Jumpgate is the best that it can be. What makes it difficult to complete a session? Are you encountering bugs? What did we do well, and where can we continue to improve?

Accessing the Beta

Embarking into the Beta is a one-way trip, and is limited to new campaigns, or copies of existing ones. Since this is a Beta, bugs may occur, and should be reported via a bug ticket, or from right within the Tabletop:

Report bugs via the toolbar or chat panel.

To opt in, simply check the “Use the Jumpgate Beta” checkbox on the game creation page.

If you’re not yet a Roll20 Subscriber, access to the Beta will unlock instantly upon signup.

What’s New?

In our original announcement, we detailed dozens of exciting features and updates that were included in Jumpgate at launch. Here are some more that have been introduced since, in large part due to feedback from our Pro Beta testers:

  • We released a large code refactor to address some common crash/freeze causes and  desynchronization behavior in the Tabletop
  • Been busy tackling the numerous bugs highlighted by Beta users (our Change Log has all the details!)
  • Added ability to transmogrify objects from non-Jumpgate games into Jumpgate games
  • Improved stability of multitouch gesture support for iPad
  • Updated Tutorial Translations with optimized language
  • There’s now a Jumpgate Achievement Badge that you can earn by joining any Jumpgate game on Roll20
  • Improved load speed for pages that have lots of drawings on them — you should see much faster load times on these pages in Jumpgate!
  • Hex Grid labels now work properly on grids above 26 rows tall

Thanks again for helping guide this incredible journey. We couldn’t be happier to be bringing the Tabletop into a new era of gaming, and can’t wait to roll Jumpgate out to all players later this year.
