Why play Cthulhu Awakens?
You Control the Tone
Though it’s been rebuilt for stories of fear and survival, the Adventure Game Engine (AGE) has options for heroism in the face of the Mythos through its stunt system—a system the GM can also use to make creatures and cultists more fearsome, and even emulate the mind-compromising nature of Mythos horrors. But optional rules allow Game Masters to set a more heroic tone, where characters are tougher and more capable of heroic deeds.
You Control the Time
Cthulhu Awakens presents a hundred-year period called the Weird Century, running from the 1920s to now. Starting by reexamining classic Mythos tales, the setting extends the roots of that history through hot and cold wars to our time. The Weird Century is a full-fledged Mythos setting that goes beyond the stories to support generational play and even time travel—oh, and there’s a way to time travel, too.
It’s About You, Whoever You Are
At this point, H.P. Lovecraft’s vile personal beliefs are well known, and the game tackles this head-on, deconstructing problematic stories and providing alternatives. The game assumes the classic stories represent one biased point of view, hiding more complex, accessible stories. We don’t believe in “degenerate” and “superior” peoples, and our interpretation of the Mythos rejects those ideas too.
The AGE System in Cthulhu Awakens
As mentioned, Cthulhu Awakens uses the Adventure Game Engine familiar to players of games such as Fantasy AGE, Modern AGE, and The Expanse. AGE games are easy to learn, and adapting rules from one game to another requires minimal effort. Cthulhu Awakens uses innovations developed in our most recent games and adds others. The most prominent new element for players is the Alienation system, which represents the corrosive but enlightening effects of the Mythos on human minds. Beyond Mythos monsters, gods, and cults, the game also includes eldritch workings: a system of Mythos magic that anyone with the correct instructions can attempt, though it may not be wise to do so, and psychic powers that tap into the longstanding connections between spiritualism, parapsychology, and horror.
