Measuring distances is key to many games played on Roll20, and while we’ve had a Measure Tool since our earliest days, we felt like it was time to give this oft-used feature a refresh. Powered by our new and improved VTT Redesign, we’ve expanded your ability to get important information quickly and easily in your next game.

New Design and Easier Access to Information

First, we took the time to update the design of the Measure Tool to follow in the footsteps of our new Toolbar redesign. You’ll notice the look and feel of the tool has been greatly improved. In addition, we’re now surfacing more information at your fingertips.

When you start measuring, the dialog box now makes it very clear whether or not what you’re doing will be Broadcast to Others in the game, so you can be sure to hide your measurements if you’re the GM and just checking a secret ambush.

When you are actively measuring, there is now more information presented including additional info on the measurement itself, and you can now see the name of the person doing the measurement so there’s no confusion about who’s checking to see how far that monster is from attacking the healer.

Introducing Measurement Shapes

Perhaps the most exciting new addition is a variety of measurement shapes beyond just the simple line shape that we’ve always had. With Square, Circle, and Cone, you can now quickly and easily check many common spells and area effects. Each shape has its own unique set of options, including measuring from the center of the shape or the edge, the angle of the shape for cones, and much more. We encourage you to spend some time playing around with the new feature so that you can get a sense of all the possibilities.

For Players and GMs Alike

Of course these tools are great for game masters, but they are also incredibly helpful for players, which is why everyone in your next Roll20 game can take advantage of the new tools. It’s like having a handy library of AoE spell template shapes built right into every session.

Powered by the VTT Redesign

The new Measure Tool builds on the work that we started in our Toolbar redesign, and it’s only available to those who have opted in to the new Toolbar. So if you haven’t already, be sure to opt in and help us test out the future of the Roll20 experience!
