Grim ghouls, creeping dread, and ghostly apparitions are materializing in so many games this month that we wanted to take a moment to point you towards some of our favorite tools for playing D&D games in the horror genre!
Official Wizards adventures on Roll20 include pre-prepped maps with tokens placed and hidden where appropriate and dynamic lighting for pro subscribers, so jumpscares hide in the darkness until players move to reveal them. Here are some great horror genre titles in this category!
Stranger Things: Welcome to the Hellfire Club
Four short adventures inspired by Eddie Munson’s unfinished campaign. Each makes a great horror one shot to play with your friends, brimming with eighties nostalgia.
The Curse of Strahd
It’s a classic adventure for a reason. There’s no better time to start this epic vampire hunting adventure than during spooky season. Plus, your tarokka cards give the adventure a lot of replay value and several encounters can be used to build interesting one shots from, like the Amber Temple or saving the wereravens from the cult of evil druids on Yester Hill. To pass through the mists is to fear what awaits you!
Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft
The Domains of Dread outlined in this book make incredible horror fueled settings! There’s also a guide for the key elements of different horror subgenres to help you nail the feel. Plus, using this book with Roll20’s D&D sheets allow you to build characters with haunting backgrounds or with horror steeped species like the Reborn, the Hexbood, and the Dhampir!
Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden
This survival horror sandbox provides a modular quest line that allows you to play the full adventure or pull out individual quests that make great one-shots. The Black Cabin invites adventurers to solve a mystery by communicating with a lingering spirit and face undead revenants sent by the Frostmaiden to punish them for defying her. Or perhaps you want to lean into the primal horror of surviving the frozen landscape to climb Kelvin’s Cairn, brave an avalanche, and fight off yeti in order to rescue what remains of a missing expedition. Whichever places of interest you don’t visit in chapter 2 make great one-shots for your table later on.

Roll20 Subscribers get access to “Reserve,” offering a new free map, adventure, or tool to claim every month. This month’s feature is Happy Jack’s Fun House.
We can also recommend The Madhouse of Tasha’s Kiss – available for both 2014 and 202r rulesets by the same creator. In this adventure, the party finds an abandoned pageant wagon in a desolate village where everyone is missing except for a small boy who claims they followed a jester into the cart. Within, the players discover a portal to the madhouse and must survive its horrors to solve the mystery. This is a great one shot that’s scaleable for levels 3-10 and easily added within any Domain of Dread!
