The new D&D 5E Player’s Handbook (2024) is here, packed with revised features on Roll20 – get ready, there’s plenty to talk about today!
Free Basic Rules
With our Free Basic Rules, you’ll be able to create D&D 2024 characters yourself, for free. These free rules are a fraction of what’s available in the Player’s Handbook, but it’s enough to get you started and running a game! Try building a character today!
Compendium Redesign
All of the new D&D 2024 rules are available in our new D&D compendium! This new view of the compendium will make reading and finding your content a breeze – an uplifted navigation system and an overall cleaner experience. Learn more about the redesign project.

D&D Character Sheet & Builder
From the start, our main goal has been to give you flexibility in how you play. This means not only supporting D&D rules and homebrew in character sheets, but also offering tools that keep your games running smoothly!
To help make the transition to the new character sheet and builder experience as seamless as possible, we recently launched the ability for you to have both of the official 5E sheets within one campaign on the Roll20 Tabletop. Players can choose the sheet that works best for them without the whole table needing to switch at once.

This feature is only available in Jumpgate, Roll20’s Improved Tabletop – all the details on how to set up multiple sheets can be found in our Help Center.
With the launch of the new Player’s Handbook, the new D&D 5E (2024) by Roll20 character sheet is out of Beta! Over the past 6 weeks, you’ve likely noticed new features being added to the sheet during the Beta period.
We’ve added Drag & Drop for spells, given you the option to turn on the Roll Query roll option, allow you to toggle on a setting to always roll damage with attacks, and released many iterative updates. All the details can be found in our change log.
Starting today, you can enable 2024 rule mechanics like the new exhaustion rules and weapon masteries, which you can Drag & Drop onto your sheet and manage in the Combat tab as you prefer!
The new character builder will stay in Beta a bit longer as we complete the full experience. Starting today, you’ll notice several new features in the builder:
- You can use the new 2024 rules for Class, Species, Backgrounds, Feats, Spells, and more, or stick with the 2014 versions—it’s up to you!
- A new ‘review’ screen summarizes your choices and shows any missing choices at a glance.
- You can now use Point Buy, Roll, or Manually enter numbers alongside the Standard Array for your ability scores
In case you missed it, everyone has free access to the community-created Tactician class from Drizzt’s Travelogue of Everything, available now in the builder!

Play D&D in Discord
Last month, we introduced the option to launch the full Roll20 virtual tabletop directly within Discord, offering more flexibility in how you play. Now you can create campaigns in Discord with the new D&D 5E (2024) sheet and access free updated content for Frozen Sick. Or, pick up Heart of Stone with Frontiers of Eberron and use the new character sheet!
What’s Next for D&D on Roll20
We’re thrilled to reach this major milestone in revamping our 5E experience, but this is just the beginning. We have a lot more coming in the next few weeks. Here’s a preview of what to expect:
- Updated character sheet and builder designs to provide information density, based on your feedback
- The builder will get level up functionality as well as additional slides to support Equipment and Character Details plus filter and search functionality
- The character sheet will get additional Drag & Drop functionality, including Feats and Proficiencies, as well as additional sheet and campaign settings
- The Compendium will offer an easier view for Spells, Monsters, and Items
With all these exciting updates plus more to come, we’re committed to making your Roll20 D&D experience smoother and more flexible than ever. Stay tuned for even more features in the weeks ahead!
