We had a chance to sit down with Domille and chat about these maps, her love of dragons, and her work as a cartographer! Check it out below
What was the inspiration for these maps?
The Clockwork Dragon was originally released as a broken version sometime in 2020, which became one of my most popular maps. After that success, I decided it would be a bit of fun story telling if there was also an option for DMs to present the dragon as it once was – whole and beautiful in its own lair. There are even included dragon tokens that dungeon masters can use to let characters mount this draconic construct.
Dragon Egg Hatchery is one of my own personal favorites. When I first started the map I just wanted something old, lived in, cozy, something that would have a lot of history and magic to it. As I kept working through the concept of the map I eventually settled on it being a hatchery, presenting a new story telling opportunity for dungeon masters to explore.
You’ve done a lot of dragon maps. What is it about dragons that you like so much?
The fantasy genre is my absolute favorite – books, movies, games… even my office decor leans heavily into fantasy. Dragons are a quintessential fantasy creature. Whenever I work on anything dragon-related, it teleports me into a magical land of heroism and adventure.
If you could choose one type of dragon as a benefactor, which would you choose?
It would definitely be some sort of a metallic one. I love the idea of a benevolent, wise dragon that may give you some tough love, but could save your life at a critical moment.
What is your favorite piece of dragon lore from within the D&D multiverse?
The fact that they can polymorph into people is so cool. Imagine you are just talking to a mysterious stranger, and then BOOM, they were a dragon the whole time!
Do you have a favorite moment to share involving a dragon from your own table?
My husband’s character, Scraps, was a kobold with draconic ancestry who got to rediscover his dragon-power as we progressed through the game. One of the more epic moments was when he unlocked the first dragon-like aspect of his character.
What’s your favorite product you’ve created on the Roll20 Marketplace that’s not this one and why?
Cosmic Horror Portal is probably one of the cooler maps I’ve released. It is a phased battle map, which means it progresses, changing as the players move through the encounter, and I think the phases for this one came out really well (and terrifying). Either huge tentacles reach out of the portal or a giant arm that proceeds to smash everything in its vicinity! There’s lots of scope for the imagination.
