An Enormous Year in Review! What You May Have Missed, and a Glimpse at What’s Next

2024 had been about laying new foundations. In 2025, we used that base to build more features than ever before! The VTT, character tools, D&D sheet, and content experiences all received major updates! Here’s a quick rundown of the most exciting additions!

All New VTT, All New Features

Rebuilding the VTT engine from the ground up was a massive undertaking, and we spent over a year working closely with the community to deliver a faster, friendlier experience that allows us to build features more quickly.

Map Pins – Entering Open Beta this January!

GMs can annotate maps with notes for players AND private reminders for themselves, keeping key information right where it’s needed. After a successful subscriber Early Access beta in 2025, Map Pins will enter Open Beta for all users in early 2026.

A Whole New Layer!

The highly requested Foreground Layer provides GMs way more control. You can incorporate rooftops, tree cover, weather effects, reactive traps, and countless other creative uses, with fine tune controls for how elements fade in-and-out and interact with lighting.

Reactive Scenes

Reactions let GMs rig traps, effects, text, rolls, and Macros that players trigger when their token overlaps it. It only takes a few clicks to set up. Manipulate opacity to make parts of your scene appear or disappear, or send dialogue and commands to chat. Exploration has never been as fun (or anxiety-inducing)!

No Map? No Problem!

Dungeon Scrawl is now connected to Roll20, letting you draw a playable dungeon in seconds! We’ve also been working on improving Dungeon Scrawl by addressing outstanding bugs and feature requests, improving the user interface, and introducing new presets to make mapping easy for people of all skill levels.

More Compendium Sharing and Storage

By popular demand, our new Elite Subscription gives GMs who want more 4x the content-sharing and 5x the storage! It also includes a free subscription to Dungeon Scrawl’s Pro features: unlocking a commercial use license, autosave, unlimited cloud storage, and advanced tools. All this on top of existing subscriber benefits, like free Demiplane Unlimited, Roll20 Reserve monthly content drops, and more!

Looking ahead

In 2026, we’re not slowing down. Get excited for:

  • Map Pins opening up to all users, with exciting customization on the way!
  • Even more graphics and performance upgrades for big tables and busy maps
  • More surprises… we’ll share when the time is right

Huge D&D Character Sheet Updates

We received so much of your feedback since D&D 2024 launched 1 year ago, and we’ve spent this year incorporating so much of it! Here’s the highlights.

D&D Homebrew Builder

Create custom classes, subclasses, backgrounds, and species directly inside Roll20. Generate level-specific features that deeply modify the character sheet, just like official content. This is also perfect for those who own a physical book, but not a digital edition, and want to plug in your content directly.

Major Improvements to Sheet Editing

D&D PC Inline Editing lets you make changes directly on the character sheet during play without entering any settings or modal screens. Additionally, we’ve improved D&D NPCs, rolling out a simple view that makes juggling multiple creatures at once a breeze.

Instant Shops & Treasure Chests

In addition to Bastion sheets, we’ve rolled out the D&D Loot Manager, letting you create Shop and Treasure sheets! Generate items instantly based on your filter criteria, or edit and create your own items. This has been in Pro subscriber beta, and will be going live to all in early 2026!

Automation Support

We added better automation to the D&D 2024 sheet, including support for macros and popular mod scripts. A new one-click button lets anyone turn sheet actions into macros, no technical knowledge required!

Looking ahead

In 2026, we want to make sure you can truly access characters anywhere and everywhere, with all the bells and whistles.

  • Mobile responsiveness! Expect better support across your tablets and smart phones.
  • Expanded (and friendlier) mod script and automation support
  • Advanced Dice Syntax and Roll Template support
  • The public launch of our Loot Manager with brand new features
  • Continuing to address each of your pain points and requests

More Value for Purchased Content

We believe in making content on Roll20 the best value for your money, and have prioritized connecting our platforms to make your games more accessible and looking incredible!

A New D&D Reading Experience

Content you own on Roll20 now unlocks in the new and beautiful D&D Nexus, allowing you to read the entire book from cover to cover on mobile, tablet, or PC.

Top Notch Character Sheets for Daggerheart, Starfinder 2e, & More!

Demiplane offers best-in-class character management, and that’s now available directly in Roll20! We’ve added Demiplane support for:  Alien, Avatar, Candela Obscura, Cosmere, Cyberpunk Red, Daggerheart, DC20, Daggerheart, Fallout, Marvel Multiverse RPG, Pathfinder 2e, Starfinder 2e, and Vampire: The Masquerade. We’ve also been introducing Demiplane powered NPCs!

Content That Unlocks Across Platforms

Many of our titles now unlock across both Roll20 and Demiplane, to provide you with a complete VTT, Digital Reader, and Character Management solution that is available wherever you are! If you’re a Plus, Pro, or Elite subscriber, a Demiplane subscription is automatically included, letting you make unlimited characters!

New DriveThruRPG Marketplaces

We launched a complete refresh of DTRPG marketplaces, making it smoother than ever to find your favorite games. We continue to add more titles to our library that unlock both PDF and VTT content! Additionally, we’ve rolled out more tools for creators and publishers, including our Partner Shipping Program – which allows us to sell all sorts of RPG-related merchandise like dice, apparel, and more!

Looking ahead

In 2026, you can look forward to..

  • More D&D back catalogue added to the D&D Nexus
  • Greater integrations between Roll20 and Demiplane
  • Improved performance between systems
  • More game systems supported in the Demiplane Nexus / Roll20 integration ecosystem!

Looking Forward

This was just a portion of what we’ve launched, not including dozens of quality of life improvements (shoutout to measure on movement and place party!), hundreds of bug fixes and performance upgrades, and under the hood updates that set us up for even greater success going forward. 2025 was shaped by you, your conversations with us, and the way you play, and that momentum is rolling into 2026. We are building and shipping the tools you want faster than ever before, and that’s not changing! Thanks for being part of it and building amazing games with us. We can’t wait to show you what’s next!
