Learn How to Play D&D on Roll20

New to D&D or to virtual tabletops? We know it might feel a bit overwhelming. Roll20 VTT has got you covered. Here are a few videos to help you along the way.

How to Get Started with D&D: This quick overview of what we have to offer for Dungeons & Dragons focuses on the D&D Sheet and Builder by Roll20, but it’s also a great introduction to the platform if you’re joining us for the first time.

D&D Encounters: From one of our favorite power users, Nick Olivio, this video walks you step by step through setting up your first D&D Encounter.

D&D Chaos: This three-episode actual play stars Brennan Lee Mulligan, Aabria Iyengar, Travis McElroy, Mica Burton, and Becca Scott. While not a tutorial, this actual play is a great way to see how D&D works through a whole session. Better yet, we promise you’ll laugh till your sides hurt.

Free Starter Rules

Before you dive into our library of content, we recommend checking out the Free Basic Rules for Dungeons & Dragons 5.5e.

The Free Basic Rules have everything you need to get started. They offer a terrific overview of the mechanics of the game and also help both players and Dungeon Masters understand how to prepare and play!

Character Sheet

Your character sheet is the heart of your entire game. And Roll20 makes it effortless. Your attributes, spells, feats, and history can be accessed handily, powering your rolls directly into the game space.

The D&D 5.5e Character Sheet & Builder by Roll20 walks you through how to build a character using official content and cool new options from third-party designers It also comes with plenty of free features and options to let you customize to your heart’s content!. And it works with both Dungeons & Dragons 5e and 5.5e.

Did we mention it is free to create as many characters as you’d like using the Free Basic Rules on Roll20 Characters?

Not only has the team rolled out a robust character builder, but the gorgeous character sheet has had plenty of updates (with more on the way!) in the last year:

  • Homebrew. Create custom classes, subclasses, backgrounds, and species directly inside Roll20. Generate level-specific features that modify the character sheet deeply, just like official content.
  • PC In-Line Editing. Make changes directly on the character sheet during play without entering any settings or modal screens.
  • NPC Improvement. Additionally, we’ve improved D&D NPCs, rolling out a simple view that makes juggling multiple creatures at once a breeze.
  • Automation Support. We added better automation to the D&D 5.5e sheet, including support for macros and popular mod scripts. A new one-click button lets anyone turn sheet actions into macros, no technical knowledge required!

Not sure what class to choose? Check out the Class Guide!

Playing in-person? Good news: The D&D 5.5e Sheet by Roll20 is designed for mobile, allowing you access your characters through a web-based browser right on your phone.

Maps

Roll20 is PACKED with incredible maps on the Marketplace, from talented creators and designers including Gabriel Pickard, Moonlight Maps, and Tom Cartos. There is always something available for every game, with over 14,000 different Map titles in our store. While you’re there, pick up a few free Token Packs, too!

The best part of Roll20 is that if you get your maps from outside of the Marketplace, you can easily upload them into the VTT yourself.

Some of our favorite free maps come from Heroic Maps, who designed three different sample packs for Forgotten Realms, Heroes of the Borderlands, and Eberron: Forge of the Artificer. Heroic Maps designs their battlemaps to be used either in Roll20 VTT or printed for your table.

Map Pins used in Heroes of the Borderlands

This year, we also released Map Pins, which is free for all to use. Map Pins can help you prep for your game by marking notable locations, adding descriptions and artwork, and giving your players a lay of the land from their own perspective.

Dungeon Scrawl

Prefer to make your own maps for free? We got you covered there too! Dungeon Scrawl is a free online mapmaking tool for TTRPGs.

The Dungeon Scrawl browser-based application allows Game Masters and worldbuilders to create dungeons, towns, and other scenes in minutes, no experience required. This easy-to-use tool is designed to make mapmaking fast and accessible, suitable for Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, or any tabletop game that needs quick, clear visuals.

From detailed dungeon crawls to unplanned maps when your party changes direction suddenly, Dungeon Scrawl helps you create, decorate, and export your maps in minutes. Use it in your browser, export to a virtual tabletop, or print high-resolution maps for the table.

Dungeon Scrawl also connects directly to Roll20, allowing you to build maps within your campaign as you play! You can continue editing existing maps without managing files or using additional storage.
