The Autumn Road Map | Savage Scrolls, by Eddie Porter

Do maps inspire your worldbuilding or does worldbuilding inspire your maps?

I would have to say world-building inspires my maps.

Which Forgotten Realms region are you most excited to explore?

Icewind Dale!

What’s your biggest tip for people looking to start making their own maps?

Start by drawing locations that interest you as an artist or player. Try not to think too hard about what other players might want to see; that will come later as you develop your techniques and skills.

What are some staple maps from your shop that you would recommend to people who like this sample?

The Desert Tomb and Woodland Realm

Animated Desert Map | Angela Maps

Do maps inspire your worldbuilding or does worldbuilding inspire your maps?

A little of both!  Sometimes I make a map because I need it for a game I am running.  And sometimes when I am a player in a game, I am disapointed by a map we fight on and inspired to make a better one.

Which Forgotten Realms region are you most excited to explore?

I’ve played so much Baulder’s Gate 3, so being able to explore it anew in a TTRPG environment would be amazing.

What’s your biggest tip for people looking to start making their own maps?

Consistency!  Set a schedule and stick to it.  Before you know it, you’ll have a nice library of maps.

What are some staple maps from your shop that you would recommend to people who like this one?

At the end of every year I do a map pack that has the favorites from that year.  It’s a great way to get a lot and save a few bucks.  My 2023 pack is one of my favorites.

Ancient Worlds Temples & Ruins Maps | Tom Cartos

Do maps inspire your worldbuilding or does worldbuilding inspire your maps?

It is almost always a combination of both. The higher level worldbuilding gives me ideas for things like environments, architectural styles and cultural aspects of my maps. Then as I create the maps in detail the worldbuilding story gets fleshed out at a more granular level.

Which Forgotten Realms region are you most excited to explore?

Baldur’s Gate has a strong draw for me, not just because of the video games, but because I love to see how larger, more diverse cities function in fantasy worlds. With so many different people and groups in a relatively small space, the overlaps and connections between them can have fascinating cascading effects on how a city grows and evolves over time creating wonderful opportunities for environmental storytelling.

What’s your biggest tip for people looking to start making their own maps?

When designing any location, it is important to keep in mind the people or creatures that inhabit (or used to inhabit) that space. Consider how they would use it on a day-to-day basis. This can be a great source of inspiration for things like layout, room types, unique objects or items and will help your maps feel more believable as a live-in place.

What are some staple maps from your shop that you would recommend to people who like this sample?

If you are looking for more maps that help develop the story of your world, then make sure to check out my Into the Wilds series of maps. These are smaller encounter maps that fill the gaps between major locations and set pieces, and can make your world feel like a much more rich and vibrant place.
