What Makes Blades in the Dark So Sharp

Blades in the Dark now has its own Compendium on Roll20, which is as good an excuse as any to gush about the game. And I really don’t need much of an excuse. Blades in the Dark is a fantastic experience, and it got me back into roleplaying games after an extended hiatus. I’ll basically take any opportunity to talk about why I love it, and why I think you’ll love it, too.

Why I Love Dragons

My first D&D books were hand-me-downs. A friend’s older cousin passed them down to me after I showed an interest in fantasy novels. They must have been hand-me-downs to him, too, because they were pretty old–a Player’s Handbook and a Dungeon Master’s Guide for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. The title page placed the copyright at 1979, and this age, coupled with the changing-of-hands ritual through which I acquired them, gave them a sort of sacred air.

Why I Love Dungeons

Emerging from the trap door, you come into a closed space with a wheel-and-spoke layout. Surrounding the octagonal room there are 8 mini-chambers, each set off with a sort of mirrored partition. At the center of the room, ornate and ancient runes are sketched into the floor. They glow and hum with some arcane enchantment. But before you can really study their shape, your eye catches on what lies atop them; a corpse, half-decayed, still-decaying, covered partially with dusty rubble.

I turned my Alien: RPG Campaign Into A Weekly TV Drama

Building Worlds With Friends

Guest Blog: Bringing Fiasco to Roll20

Hey friends! I’m Jason from Bully Pulpit Games, designer of Fiasco and Roll20 fan. I thought I’d share a little bit about why the new version of Fiasco is a perfect match for Roll20, and what was involved in bringing it to the platform. If you are unfamiliar with Fiasco, it is a tabletop roleplaying game about dumb people getting into trouble. It flips the script on most roleplaying games, in that you really savor the stupid confusion and epic failure that your characters inevitably endure, and things inevitably do not go well for them.

Naturally Critical: Roll20 in 2020

Twenty looms large as a number of significance in our work. Getting the desired side of the infamous icosahedron die to display is a sign of great success and invites celebration. But rolls are random, despite what our brain tells us. While randomness and opportunity certainly play a role in building a product, they aren’t what you rely on to achieve progress. We think it’s important to talk to you– our community– about the state of the board, and what we’re working on progressing in the new year.

Rolling Back the Zoom Tool Update

Yesterday, we released an update to the Zoom tool on Roll20. Our intention was to address user requests by simplifying the existing tool and more closely aligning with modern standards. Unfortunately, the update missed the mark - and more critically, created usability issues for users. As a result, we’ve decided to roll back the update and revert to the previous version while we continue work on the new Zoom. The code released yesterday is still available on the Dev Server, including yesterday’s hot fixes, for your continued input.

In previous years we’ve done our staff retreats alongside Gen Con, but as anyone who’s tried securing housing at that sort of publicly facing convention knows… logistics can get a little hairy. (For those curious, we will still have a presence at Gen Con, it just won’t be everyone.) As such, this year we planned out a fully removed team retreat– next week our whole team will be hanging out in person instead of functioning remotely, 4/9 thru 4/12.

Postmortem for 4/4/18 Downtime

Early yesterday morning, Roll20 experienced a site-wide outage which affected your ability to play games. We strive to have the site up and running 24/7, because we know that with a global audience, every hour of the day is someone’s game night, and we never want to be the reason that your group has to cancel. Unfortunately, this time we fell short of that goal, and we want to sincerely apologize for that.

Roll20® esports parts with Heroes of the Storm roster

In October Blizzard announced to teams a new structure for the 2018 Heroes Global Championship, and part of that new structure was ownership of team slots. Since October we’ve talked at length with our roster about a way to gradually gain ownership of their HGC slot, but conversations never got even so far as a true method or numbers.

Roll20 for iPad and Android Live

Roll20 for Android and Roll20 for iPad are live. We’ll be talking a lot about these native applications and their uses in tandem with Roll20 Virtual Tabletop in the days to come. For a quick idea of what these applications cover, recall these are part of our “Update of Holding”, so the handheld elements (things like dice and character sheets) are included, while the “tabletop” elements (maps, tokens) are not.

If you’ve ever played Dungeon World or watched RollPlay’s Swan Song streaming series, you’ve experienced his collaborative, entrancing skill set. We’ll be holding onto the Android version until the iPad element is live, and we’re hopeful to see both up and running soon.

The Orr Group Industry Report, Q4 2014

We’ve released the stats from our second ever Industry Report into the wild (and many thanks to the press outlets that have covered these stats thus far). Here’s the main overview: More after the jump. Looking at the numbers, in comparison to last quarter*, the biggest shift is the upswing in 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons players and games. It’s exciting to see the new edition get an upswing in use, and doubly so to see it happening via Roll20 because the system is optionally gridless.

Roll20 Latency Lately

The past two weeks we have been tracking an issue with increased latency in Roll20 that has been affecting a small subset of games. This lag manifests itself in several ways; the most prevalent being a delay between rolling dice and seeing the results, and things such as moving a piece and having it by delayed before it “moves” on other players’ screens. At first we thought that this increased latency was being caused by QuantumRoll (our relatively-new dice engine), and we took steps to address this issue.

What Is “The Orr Group Industry Report” and What Does It Tell Us?

The Orr Group is kind of a restless bunch. That’s why we created Roll20 and continue refining it– we can’t leave well enough alone. We heard many folks at conventions talk about how “THIS tabletop game is just destroying THAT tabletop game… nobody even plays THAT one anymore” and became a bit flummoxed. We had done surveys over a year ago that indicated a lot of diversity in gameplay via Roll20.

Where We Stand Redux

Even the longest journey begins with the first step. For Roll20, that first step involved a small Kickstarter campaign with a goal to raise $5,000 to help us finish our virtual tabletop. To us, that was a clear indication that we would not be in this alone, and that we were traveling down the right path.

Rugged Reroll Dev Blog #2: Chatty Chatty Bang Bang

Unfortunately, the only way to get video chat in the browser at the time was to use the ubiquitous Adobe Flash plugin.

Dice Overhaul: 3D Dice, New Mechanics Support

There’s no doubt that a core piece of any virtual tabletop system is the dice roller.
